– Introduction to Speed
Xhimi Hoti’s artistic research focuses on the concepts of space, time and perspective; which are manifested through the emergence on his large canvases of geometric shapes, and the volumes that arise from them, building architectural settings with a strong impact visual and emotional, because it is a reminder of an elsewhere that immediately reveals itself to our gaze. Specifically, it is an elsewhere in time, located in a further dimension than the one in which we find ourselves, and which the artist arrives at through a personal exercise of painting as an experience that is both physical and mental.
The artist followed the same tendency as the Futurists to look resolutely ahead, he creates works that illustrate geometric structures that are certainly solid and concrete, yet at the same time and in the process of becoming, because they are represented by taking into account their possibility to movement on the surface. Direct observation of movement in reality brings the artist while working to prefigure the action of the shapes and lines it constructs, materialising that reciprocal effect which makes each able to influence the other and which expresses itself in absolute dynamism. The gestural character of the backgrounds contributes profoundly to the suggestion of movement as the instinctive and irrational component is always in perfect balance with the rigour of geometric surfaces, in a perfect interpenetration between expressive needs and the potentially antithetical obtained through the consistent use of a chromatic register limited to white, black and greys.
Hoti’s creative process and artistic practice therefore refer stylistically and conceptually to the work of the architect Antonio Sant’Elia, and in particular to the series of tables New Town in which buildings, roads and power stations are built through the intersection of volumes and planes enhanced by extreme perspective expansion. Sant’Elia’s projects represent an ideal and synthetic projection of architectures that belong to a time future, which, not surprisingly, are striking in their ability to evoke the city rather than the future describe it.
Similarly, Xhimi Hoti’s works are the result of a personal power imaginative, of a rapidity of thought and action, which make them inseparable from one another by the speed of the artist himself. Unstoppable and indefatigable in reconceiving that elsewhere that still does not exist, Hoti is the emblem of the ‘energy habit’ that has been the perennial reference of Futurist action. His artistic work seems to adhere perfectly to one of the most incisive points of Marinetti’s First Manifesto of Futurism: “Why should we look at ourselves if we are to break through the mysterious doors of the impossible? Time and Space died yesterday. We already live in the absolute, for we have already created the eternal speed omnipresent’.
